An axe (pronunciation AKS). People use axes to cut wood.

‘A lathe? Are you sure? Don’t you want something more useful? Maybe an axe? What can a lathe do?’

‘A lathe can do lots of things!’ said Anders. ‘At least, my brother does lots with it.’

‘Fine, fine. But do be careful, my boy.’

‘It’s just a haunted41 castle,’ said Anders. ‘What could go wrong?’

So Anders went to the castle, which was lying in ruins42. Anders had never seen ruins before, so he thought, Wow, what a strange architectural decision. It looks interesting, but it’s so cold with all those holes in the ceiling!

He found a nice room with a chair in it, so he made a fire and sat down by the lathe.

‘If only I could shudder!’ he said. ‘Somehow, I don’t think I’m going to learn it here.’

Just then, he heard a cry from a dark corner.

‘Ow, meow! It is so cold!’

‘If you are cold, come and sit by the fire, silly!’

Two great black cats jumped out of the darkness43 and sat beside him. Their eyes shone bright red. They sat by the fire, warming themselves, before saying, ‘Ow, meow! Shall we play a game of cards?’

Anders didn’t like the look of these cats. Black cats knew magic, his mother always told him. So he said, ‘Yes, let’s. But first, I wonder, do black cats have black paws? Or do you have pink paws like other cats?’

‘Ow, meow! Don’t worry about our paws, boy.’ They suddenly seemed very shy, and moved back into the darkness44.

Anders raised an eyebrow45. ‘Well, if you won’t show me your paws, then I won’t play your games.’
